A MEMORIAL service was held for one of York’s best-loved public figures on 8 July at the York Minster. Former Lord Mayor Jack Archer, who twice served as the city’s civic figurehead, died in March at the age of 90, having devoted much of his life to a string of good causes and being a tireless champion for the rights of elderly people. He was a core member of YOPA and is much missed.

Jack's work was remembered by 3 speakers: Linda Tester from the Older Citizens Advocacy York, Debbie Glover, Head Teacher at the Poppleton Road School where Jack was on the Board of Governors, and Brian Watson, Labour Councillor for the Guildhall Ward. The young Poppy Road choir movingly sang "You are my Sunshine". The service was conducted by the Rev Canon Glyn Webster and was attended by the Civic Party, family, friends, colleagues and many others who remember Jack with respect and fondness.
